The barrels are held onto the frame by a knurled bolt (?) that uses an allen wrench.Soak a couple of cotton floor mop strands in a potassium nitrate solution (black powder will work). Clamp one in the cocked jaws of your flintlock cock, light the end of it, and open the frizzen to expose your priming powder. Pull the trigger. Satisfaction guaranteed, and you just took off another 100 years!My small tree critters have always been dropped with a .32 or .36, and they excel on small game. With a .40 all shots need to be at the head/neck area even with very light loads. Mid-body hits might be okay, you'll just have to see. Preferably concaved a tad bit for a ball if wanted. Ideally, the steel tip should not have contact with the bore walls anyway.A key to the formula is to draw a line along the comb and it should pass right through the tumbler screw for the flint cock and just under the pan. I bought this rifle for a much grander project. I was planning to make wooden side panels for barrels and reset ramrod pipes. Stock had damage to toe, that I repaired, as well as a cracked buttplate. Had to take a much larger one and refit it.The patent breech in percussion guns is safer and easier to clean. Drum and nipple breeches are manure from several perspectives. Most modern patent breeches on the factory made guns are designed to be cheap to make and install. "Bedding Compound" AKA "Glass Bedding" AKA "Epoxy Bedding" are all terms to describe using some kind of epoxy to fill up voids, offer a better fit of parts (like the tang and breech to a stock) or even repair broken/cracked stocks.

With this thinned stain, use a small, fine hair paint brush about 3/4" to 1" wide and paint the stain onto the wood. Apply the stain "with the grain". Try not to overlap the strokes but also try no cover all of the wood so there are no unstained places.Obsidian is a volcanic glass. It tends to shatter like glass. While flint, agate, etc are 7 on Moh's hardness scale, obsidian is only 5. BTW stainless steel is also around 5 on the same scale. A good frizzen may actually be harder than obsidian. I think with an import production gun off of a rest 4" to 6" on a standard Black Powder 100 Yd. target would be Ok for 3 Rd. groups. As mentioned the underhammer was used primarily for target rifles and since hunting was 95% of what guns were used for that explains the scarcity of that design. For hunting they do have a drawback. I used 80 gr. 2F with a t/c 370gr. maxi ball was a very accurate load out of all my 50 cal. t/c muzzleloaders with a 1:48 twist. A 320 gr. t/c maxi ball worked well also. Never had much luck with accuracy with the t/c maxi hunters. The maxi balls have great penetration.The bullet is a 507 grain, with a single wrap 20# paper patch. The bullet goes down with a small amount of pressure, but not very much. I was shooting at 100 yards with the first shot 2" from the group with the other 4 shots being in a 1 1/4" group.
